Healthcare leadership has always been challenging. But Tom Priselac – who served as CEO at Cedars-Sinai for 30 years – agrees that it’s never been harder than it is today. The latest episode of the #HealthcareIsHard podcast dropped today. Dr. Robert Wachter, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco joined Keith J. Figlioli for a conversation about AI and why it’s different from past waves of health IT. Dr. Wachter shared a lot of the ideas he explored in his most recent book, A Giant Leap. They covered topics like: → Why “better than today” may be the right benchmark: AI does not need to be perfect to be valuable in healthcare. If it can help clinicians review complex charts, keep up with medical literature, and reduce administrative burden better than the status quo, that is meaningful progress. → Reshaping the patient-doctor relationship: Patients are increasingly using AI to review records, understand symptoms, and shape care decisions before they ever walk into the exam room. That has implications not only for clinicians, but for how health systems think about trust, navigation, and access. → Elevating primary care: AI may allow primary care physicians to do more by offloading routine work and improving support for complex cases — while also accelerating the rise of new care models and new entrants in the market. → Underestimating the speed of change: Many leaders still do not fully appreciate how quickly AI could reshape care delivery and health system strategy.
